How did The Boho Vase begin?
The Boho Vase started during Covid, with a simple idea and a lot of curiosity. After coming across hand-painted vases online, I decided to try creating my own terracotta-inspired designs — just for fun.
What began as a creative outlet quickly turned into something more. I started selling pieces on Facebook Marketplace and Etsy, and before long, they took off. As I continued to learn, create, and refine my style, The Boho Vase grew from a small at-home setup into a full online shop.
Eventually, I outgrew my spare bedroom workspace and opened my first storefront in Ankeny, Iowa. As the business evolved, so did the vision. After acquiring Candle Bar DSM in West Des Moines, I made the decision to close the Ankeny location and bring everything together.
Today, The Boho Vase is located in Valley Junction — a curated space filled with thoughtful goods, designed to help you find something meaningful for every moment.
How did you know this is what you wanted to do?
I grew up in a small town in North Iowa, where I first fell in love with retail while working at a local gift shop. My favorite part was always creating — from styling window displays to reworking the store layout. I loved how thoughtful details could completely transform a space.
After moving to Ankeny for college, I continued working in retail and eventually stepped into leadership roles, learning how to manage a team and run a fast-paced store. But I always felt pulled toward something more.
I missed the charm of small-town shopping — the sense of community, connection, and the experience that comes with it. That’s what led me to build something of my own.
Small business has always been where my heart is. It’s about more than just products — it’s about people, relationships, and creating a space that feels meaningful to the community.
Where can we learn more?
I’ve always had a passion for both creativity and entrepreneurship — and that journey continues to evolve. In addition to The Boho Vase, I’m also the owner of Candle Bar DSM, an experience-based candle studio in West Des Moines.
If you’re interested in learning more about my journey, I’ve shared more behind the scenes on podcasts available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
I truly love what I do and the community that comes with it. Whether it’s in-store, online, or over coffee — I’m always happy to connect.
